The most powerful tool in advancing health care is evidence

At the Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences (CHÉOS), we connect the dots between research and real-world impact by producing high-quality evidence to transform health systems and improve care. Based at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, CHÉOS is home to clinicians, health economists, and statisticians collaborating to connect data, research, policy, and implementation. From evaluating the effectiveness of a new drug or treatment option, to informing policies that change how care is delivered from emergency rooms to neighbourhood clinics, CHÉOS exists to improve health outcomes for British Columbia, Canada, and the world.

For over 20 years, CHÉOS has been asking the questions that need answers. Questions like: how can we improve care for marginalized groups? How can we make health spending more cost effective? What does the future of care look like with the integration of personalized medicine? We know what questions to ask because our researchers are embedded in the health care system and focus on outcomes that are meaningful to patients as well as providers and policy makers.

At CHÉOS, we don’t keep our expertise to ourselves, instead, we connect with others who are looking for answers. In addition to conducting our own research, we provide support services to outside organizations and external researchers to share our expertise from study design to execution. Collaboration is key when working to improve something as complex as health.

Although our research spans across disciplines, CHÉOS remains focused on the needs of the patient. That means identifying disparities in the treatment of different populations and helping to select the most appropriate treatment options.

There is so much to gain by investing in research. With ever-increasing pressure on governments and health care organizations to provide high-quality care while containing costs, the evidence produced by health outcomes research is crucial for a healthier population and a healthier economy.
