TORONTO, December 12, 2022 – Starting September 2023, The Michener Institute of Education at UHN will offer a new program to meet current and anticipated health human resource (HHR) shortages and provide students with the knowledge to fill existing and new jobs in the health care system.
Health care is evolving rapidly, and the industry is facing significant gaps and shortages from an overburdened system. The COVID-19 pandemic has also revealed a number of individuals in our community interested in meaningful jobs in health care — many of whom are internationally educated professionals looking to enter Canada’s vast health care sector. Michener’s Fundamentals of Health Care program gives students the knowledge, skills and competencies to succeed in important and meaningful jobs in the Canadian health care system or to successfully transition to further health programs. This new program is unique: it is almost entirely online, allows students to work at their own pace, but also offers experiential learning opportunities. The knowledge and skills of all students admitted to the program are assessed at entry so students get advanced standing and course credit for things they already know and can do, thus allowing them to accelerate through the program and finish more quickly.
“Keeping up with rapid change in health care requires new options for students, and Michener has a long history of innovative programming to prepare graduates for jobs in health care,” says Dr. Harvey Weingarten, Michener’s Principal. “This program will help fill the current and anticipated serious staffing shortages in our health care system.”
As Canada’s only “school within a hospital” dedicated exclusively to health care education, The Michener Institute of Education at UHN offers programs that are informed by industry research and innovations, giving graduates an advantage. Michener faculty are experienced health care professionals who rely on flexible learning formats for their courses.
“Michener programs give students the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in a range of meaningful and important health care vocations,” says Dr. Kevin Smith, CEO and President of University Health Network. “Michener’s Fundamentals in Health Care program is another example of how UHN is thinking differently to come up with solutions to health human resources challenges.”
