Parliamentary Health Research Caucus Luncheon a Call to Arms to Protect Veterans’ Mental Health

OTTAWA, Tuesday, February 19, 2019 – Canadian veterans experience mental illness at more than double the rate of those in the general Canadian population. These are shockingly high rates that demand attention. The Parliamentary Health Research Caucus Luncheon on Veterans’ Health and Health Research in Canada is a call to arms to address veterans’ mental health challenges through research solutions.

Research Canada and the Parliamentary Health Research Caucus, in collaboration with co-host the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR), are proud to welcome three of Canada’s leading researchers and experts on Veterans’ health to an invitation-only luncheon with Parliamentarians to provide an overview of the health research aimed at advancing the well-being of our Veterans and highlight our strengths and challenges in taking care of the pride of Canada’s military. Dr. Ruth Lanius will discuss the use of technology to diagnose posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its subsets; Dr. Alain Brunet will provide an overview of Reconsolidation Therapy as an innovative approach to PTSD treatment; and closing out the luncheon, Dr. Jitender Sareen will discuss suicide risk and prevention amongst military personnel and Veterans.
