Parliamentary Reception to Highlight Women’s Health and Health Research in Canada

OTTAWA, May 15, 2019Research Canada and the Parliamentary Health Research Caucus are hosting an invitation-only reception to introduce Parliamentarians to thirteen of Canada’s leading experts in women’s health and health research who are using a sex- and gender-based analysis (SGBA) to understand and improve women’s health. We are thrilled to be able to profile the important and ground-breaking research being conducted by women all across Canada and by several Indigenous researchers, focusing on the themes of women and drugs; gender and violence; and sex, gender and health outcomes. Parliamentarians and guests will also have the opportunity to hear from Keynote Speaker Dr. Cara Tannenbaum, Scientific Director of the Institute of Gender and Health at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Health research and practice have traditionally assumed a gender-neutral or gender-blind stance by using men as the standard for medical practice while excluding women from clinical trials and other research. An understanding of SGBA is crucial for engaging in effective health research, policy-making and practice and offers a powerful tool for analyzing how both sex – rooted in biology – and gender – rooted in social roles shaped by environment and experience – affect our health. When we apply this expanded knowledge to policy and practice, it leads to better health outcomes for all.
