OTTAWA, September 21, 2021 – The Liberal Party of Canada has won a third mandate, returning with a projected 158 seats for another minority parliament. Erin O’Toole’s Conservative Party is projected to claim 119 seats, the Bloc Québécois 34 seats, the NDP 25, and the Green party claiming two seats. With almost one million mail-in ballots still to count, results are still being finalized and are expected to be confirmed by Elections Canada later this week.
“We congratulate the Liberal government on its win and look forward to working with new and returning Members of Parliament to advance Canadian health research and innovation,” said Dr. Rose Goldstein, Chair of Research Canada and Professor of Medicine at McGill University. “We must now work towards maximizing the contribution of our health research and innovation ecosystem to Canada’s post-COVID recovery and our future health security, social wellbeing and economic prosperity.”

In the coming weeks, Research Canada will be working to unpack the Liberal platform in light of the election results to explore what another Liberal minority government will mean for Canada’s health research and innovation ecosystem, including an exclusive, Members-only Webinar with Hill+Knowlton’s Michelle McLean on September 23. Research Canada will also be working with its Members to engage newly elected Members of Parliament across the country to raise awareness and advocate for the health research and innovation ecosystem in Canada.
